The Making Of Genghis Khan (Part 1)

The Making of Genghis Khan (Part 2)

Many of you must be going 'huh' over my post. It's okay to be surprised. After all, this series is already 22 years old - some of you are not born yet! Though I watched this series when I was very very very small, I still have fond memories of certain scenes and characters.

This series revolved around the earlier life of Genghis Khan, the most powerful conqueror known to modern history (I'm not going to elaborate much, if you want to know more about the real Genghis Khan, just click on the name and you'll be brought to wikipedia page.) Just a small trivia - Genghis Khan is Kublai Khan's grandfather, who in turn is Fung Hang Lit (Raymond Lam in LWOLAP) ancestor. Of course, LWOLAP part is just fiction.

Alex Man starred as Temujin (Genghis Khan real name), Felix Wong as Jamuka, Sean Lau as Chilaun, Shallin Tse as Börte and Jacqueline Law as 合答安 (Hap Dap On). If you don't know who Alex Man and Felix Wong are, I'm afraid that you'll be flogged by TVB fans. There's also a lot of other supporting actors, such as Eddie Kwan, Michael Tao, Nathan Chan, Chim Bing Hei, Ekin Cheng, Aaron Kwok, William So etc. Can you recognize them in the clip above? By the way, Ekin made his acting debut as Jochi in the end of the series - I forgot about Aaron, was he a kelefeh? LOL can you imagine them in Mongolian costume?

Though the series is only 10 episodes long, it was a new breakthrough for TVB. The series is filmed mainly in the real Mongolian plains, using thousands of real soldiers for their battle scenes and booked the whole flight for filming cast and crew. Back in the 80's most TVB series is filmed in Hong Kong only and the extras (soldiers) are so little. As seen in TMO clips above, the battle scenes can even put nowadays TVB production to shame. The extras TVB hired for their current series move like they haven't eaten for days. You can see that the cast and crew have close relationship, the kind of camaraderie rarely seen nowadays.

I wanted to purchase this series boxset but unfortunately, both yesasia.com and sensasian.com have completely gone out of stock and worse - it's out of print! If anyone of you saw the boxset (Cantonese audio) available for sale, please let me know as I really want to get a copy.

For a long time I've always wondered if TVB is going to remake this series. 10 episodes is just not enough to tell the story of Genghis Khan. With a bigger budget and modern technology, TVB should be able to provide a better visual effect for the remake version. Just for fun, if TVB remake this series, who would you like to cast as Temujin? Borte? Jamuka? Hap Dap On?

  1. Did you just say TEN episodes only? No Way! NO WAY!!! Must be more than that!

Alex Man was a formidable actor who looks masculine. I doubt anyone can be the formidable Temujin now. Maybe a new hot young masculine looking actor but the current brood can't cut it. Please don't say Lam Fung! Don't! DON'T! Too short.

    I still can't believe it's only 10 episodes.

Can someone just make a series about Laksamana Cheng Ho? Even more difficult to cast I tell you.

  2. Yes, 10 episode is the official release in DVD... not sure how many episode it is back in VHS day... but because of the high cost (this one super duper grand production back then), it is not impossible to have just 10 episodes.

You are right about there's no actor in TVB who looks as masculine and formidable as Alex Man. They lacked the 'fire' in their eyes... Alex portrayal is very good, he can be wild, savage, ferocious yet tender to his onscreen lover(s).

But about the short part, the real Genghis Khan is actually less than 6 foot tall... just that taller actor translate better onscreen. Haha...

  3. Oops, I mean 6 feet tall!

  4. I suppose men back then were all standard 5 foot tall! But wouldn't translate well on screen.

I hate TVB for releasing heavily edited versions in DVD. Like JTTW. 30 episodes squeezed into 20 episodes. No way no stuff was edited out. Can't they just release the old series as they're now, fully?
