DOP: Fate by the broken palm

Note: Spoiler free

Sorry about the double dubbing. I don't know why youtube didn't capture the last line. You can download the full clip below.

To download the clip, go here. You can choose to listen to cantonese on left and mandarin on right speaker.

Below is a summary of the clip above, translated by Funn. Thanks a million, Funn! :)

The fate of those who lives on this Earth are determined by the Heavens and not by oneself,
It is said those who are fortunate shall be blessed with many children,
Those who unfortunate shall have to learn to live with the taste of a life of a thousand sorrows.
It is true;
If you think that this is my story alone,
I shall tell you,
I am not alone in the world of the unfortunate ones.
But the more the Heavens dictate on me an unfortunate fate,
the more I do not believe in fate.
Even if the lines on my palm are broken,
I shall use this palm to create my own path.
Because I believe my fate is not determined by the Heavens,
but by myself.

I have also ripped another subsong from this series. I don't know the title and I think the singer is called Noelle Choi (unconfirmed). Anyway, I love this song and hope TVB will release a OST cd soon because the background music in DOP is good!

  1. Sehseh your I can understand your translation. Maybe just a bit of construction here there to tidy up but it's good. I am downloading the clip now. Will give proper feedback, not that I am good with translation anyway ...

  2. Sehseh, may I congratulate you. That clip was so deep! First time I shall give a try at translating it though I am sure Jayne may do better. Don't laugh please ... it is difficult though to translate "Ming pok" so ..ermmm here goes... the literal one first as in line by line ...

Humans whi lives between the Heaven and Earth,

The fate of theirs are determined by the Heavens and not by myself,

They say people who are bountiful in good fortune shall be blessed with many children and surrounded with many grandchildren,

People who are not so fortunate must learn earlier on in life and to taste the sorrows of having a life a thousand times lesser,

    It is true,

When you think this is my story alone, I can tell you

Those who are not so fortunate isn't me alone.

But the more the Heavens dictates on me a fate less fortunate,

The more I do not believe in fate.

Even if the fate lines on my palm is broken,

I am willing to use this palm of mine to create my own path,

because I believe I create my own path, not the heavens.

  3. Ok, tidied it up a bit to make it sound more coherent. The ones in () means I didn't quite catch the meaning, because I just realise my cantonese is not so good!!

Sehseh was there something missing before the first line? Because it is strange that fate is determined by heaven and then fate is not determined by heaven. Maybe there was a line which said "It is said that ..."?

Ok this is the best I can do. I am hopeless.

  4. Funn, thank you so much for translating. You did great :)

About the missing line, initially youtube didn't capture the last line. But a day later, the last line appeared. The downloadable version is the full one.

  5. So it's accurate?

Anyway it should be TEN THOUSAND sorrows since the clip said "man".
